The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed bridge in the world. It's easy to understand why. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architectural art work and the setting is incredible.
Although it may appear different, this image was taken on a cold (53 degree) winter day in San Francisco.
The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, the space between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. It is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The chief engineer in charge of the construction was Joseph Strauss. Strauss's original design called for two cantalevered sections on both ends of the bridge with one central tower. The final graceful suspension bridge design came from Manhattan Bridge designer Leon Moisseiff.
Construction of the bridge began in 1933 and cost 35 million dollors. The bridge was completed in 1937 and was 1.3 million under budget.
